[ Mechanics ] The Mechanics Rune explores an area most Dreadnought's never even realize exists. Technology. It can be basic technology, with sticks and rocks, or high technology, with superconducting wire traces a molecule thick layered by the millions inside a crystal the size of a penny. No matter which way you go, your inventions are sure to be anything but ordinary. The Mechanics Rune is represented by a crude club, one of the first tools ever used. The Mechanics Rune requires three things to work properly. A design, whether it be on paper, or in your head. Raw Materials, because solid objects won’t just appear out of thin air. And finally, Time. Each invention, or creation, requires a certain amount of time based on how complex it is. Easy things, like crossbows, cranes, and the like may only require a few hours. Slightly Advanced items, like engines, solar cells, and the like can take between a single day, and a full week, assuming that you spend at least 8 hours a day working on them. Advanced items, like computers, electric engines, and stuff like that, may take as little as a week, if you’re utilizing previously created technology, or it could require over a month to build something if you’re starting from scratch. Highly advanced technology, and previously unknown technology may require months, or even years to create. The Design is probably the most important part of the whole process. Without it, nothing can happen. The Dreadnought databanks contain millions of blueprints, and ideas that others have come up with, but never actually implemented, or got working. Used passively, or just by keying it, but not spending any other energy on it, it will allow you to scan other machines, and memorize their layouts and how they work. It will also take a rough idea, and help the Dreadnought along with inspiration. Plans can be created in the mind, and tested mentally to see if it will work at all. This can also be used to test a broken machine, by scanning it, and seeing what areas glow, and which ones don’t. Raw materials depend on what’s being made, but, in general, the better the materials, the better the device will work. For this reason, most Dreadnoughts use the earth rune, or the Elemental Mastery rune series to create raw materials. If you don’t have access to those runes, there will always be a Templar or a Mountain of Air hanging around in the labs. The Runes in this series all require extra time to use, when they are used for their basic purpose. The way these runes literally work, is that they take an image from your mind, and use energy to mold the raw materials that you have into that image. This requires a lot of time and effort on the Dreadnoughts part. The times required are listed beneath each rune. Level 1: Crude devices with a few moving parts, including crossbows, flintlock pistols, cranes, or a wagon. Level 2: More advanced devices with lot's of moving parts, gasoline engines, normal guns, solar collectors, and the like. Level 3: Advanced devices with very complex parts, computers, calculators, electronic devices, and the like. Level 4: Very advanced devices using all but unknown technology, energy weapons, plasma cannons, supercomputers. Level 5: Technology with no basis or explanation, but it works, plasma engines, torhoidal electromagnetic particle accelerators, zero g inducers. "blank stare" A what? [ Biomechanics ] The Biomechanics Rune allows the Dreadnought to create technology out of living things. Anything from lights that are made out of bioluminescent algae, to nanotech spiders. The Biomechanics Rune is represented by a very small body, with 2 limbs branching off, 4 arms on each limb, 8 hands on each arm, 16 fingers on each hand, etc., etc. This is, of course, a nanotech spider. The Biomechanics Rune requires as much time, and the same sort of requirements as the Mechanics Rune. The main difference is that it requires more planning, and less raw materials to create BioMechanical creatures. This rune, however, does require certain raw materials. Iron, or even lead may be good enough for a normal device, but inside of an animals body, iron will rust, and lead will cause heavy metal poisoning. Silver is a much better choice, as is gold, or the rare materials that the templars like to create. As far as time is concerned, it requires much more planning time, possibly weeks worth for even a simple change in bacteria, and more building time as well. It might take up to a week to change bacteria, or single cell organisms, two or three weeks for the advanced changes in those same organisms. Insects may require a month worth of planning, and then the same amount of time to rebuild. Small animals can require months of planning, and the same amount of time to alter. Finally, the largest creatures may take years of planning and testing, and then years more to alter. Going fast will result in high mortality rates, and may cause repercussions is your sloppiness kills too many test subjects. Level 1: You can create bioluminescent bacteria that will make things glow in the dark, one celled organisms are your domain. Level 2: You can create bacteria that will eat oil spills, or other particularly destructive toxins, small multicelled organisms are your domain. Level 3: You can create small insects that blast pests with poisons, antiseptics, or even plasma. Bugs and insects are your domain. Level 4: You can create cyborg animals that attach to your body, or each other, and form into weapons, or other things along those lines. Animals no larger than horses are your domain. Level 5: If it's alive, you can make it into technology. [ Bodily Alteration ] Bionics, cybernetics, claws, built in body armor, extra limbs, three hearts. These are all the domain of the Bodily Alteration Rune. It is represented by a four armed individual, who was, by the way, the developer of this rune. His name is unknown to all but the oldest Dreadnoughts, and for some reason they will not speak of it. The Bodily Alteration Rune requires a bit less planning time, but a bit more time to see through to the end. Changes to living bodies must be very carefully controlled, and very slowly done to keep the recipient from going into shock. Raw materials for the changes this Rune makes are taken directly from the recipients body, so this rune is typically used in conjunction with very localized applications of the Regrowth Rune. It takes about a day per level to plan out the changes this rune can make. Of course, highly detailed maps of the anatomy of the subject will reduce this time a bit. Actual alterations may take from a week or so, to years to complete. Increasing the density of muscles is relatively quick, but requires that the recipient not move for the duration. Growing a new set of arms can take years, considering that it requires now bone structure, lengthening of the spine, additional muscles, new veins, and new neural paths to all be created. Level 1: You may grow claws at the rate of 1 inch per round. Once they are grown completely they are permanent, but can be retracted if you remembered to include that in the growing. You may also make other, small changes to your body. Including increasing the size of some organs. Level 2: You may grow natural body armor, including metallic skin, spines, protruding blades, or other things like that. You may also grow extra small internal organs, including kidneys, bladders, or extra bones. Level 3: You may grow extra limbs, including arms, legs, and another head if you don't mind being a freak. You can also grow extra internal organs, including another heart, another lung, another brain. Level 4: You may incorporate bionics or cybernetics into your body, or someone else's. This requires a lot of time. You may also shift small parts of your body into a liquid, or into another type of solid, including metals. Level 5: You may shift your entire body into a liquid or solid matter, and still retain full movement in that form, some forms may add a few points to dexterity or stamina, like liquid metal forms. And some forms may add extra attack powers, like if you turn into an acid or poison. [ DNA ] DNA, the building block of life. And a highly useful tool for breeding new species of animals or plants. Using DNA you can also cure some diseases, and stop death from occurring due to age. The DNA Rune is represented by a long double helix with small bars going across it. The DNA Rune's levels don't change much over the course of the rune. They only allow some small subtle changes to be made. These changes will not be readily apparent, and in some cases may require hundreds of years to actually show any sign of changing a long lived organism. Most of the time, changes to the DNA will not be apparent until the creature has produced offspring, or has had enough time to replace most of their old body cells. Level 1: You may make minor changes, or just map the DNA, figuring out what each strand controls through the energy they control. Level 2: You may make minor changes to the DNA, increasing lifespan, getting rid of a minor disease, that sort of thing. Level 3: You may make a life changing change to the DNA, allowing an organism to ingest poisons, letting a land animal grow gills so it can live underwater. Increasing the hostility level of an animal so it can compete with a more hostile species. Level 4: You can make new species by altering the DNA of two animals then mating them. This takes lots of trial and error, since most mutations are either weaker, or just benign. Level 5: You can interbreed two totally different species and get a living animal from it. Like mating a hawk and a horse can give a pegasus, or mating a lizard and a whale can give you a wingless dragon. You may also genetically perfect an animal at this level, making all of it's offspring be perfect examples of their species. |
